What If It Rains On Your Wedding Day?

Embrace the weather and remember the real reason you’re getting married. It’s not because of the weather; it’s because you love each other.

Many couples dread the thought of rain on their wedding day, envisioning damp dresses, muddy venues, and chilly guests. Even if you’re having a summer wedding, the chances of rain are likely. The weather is one thing you can’t control in your wedding planning, so if it looks like it’s going to rain on your wedding day, it’s best to be prepared so you can enjoy yourselves regardless. Here are some rainy wedding tips from a DJ who has seen it all.

In some cultures, rain on a wedding day is seen as good luck, symbolizing cleansing and fertility. There’s even a saying that rain tightens the knot of a wedding, referencing the days of hand-fasting where couples literally tied a knot during their ceremony. Despite our best efforts, controlling the weather is impossible! The next best step is to be prepared and embrace whatever the skies decide to do. As a DJ who has played at countless outdoor weddings, I’ve compiled some top tips and advice for a rainy wedding to ensure you enjoy your special day to the fullest.

First and foremost, be prepared and have a Plan B. No matter what you have planned, always prepare for the chance of rain, especially if you are having an outdoor ceremony. Check that your venue has an alternative indoor area for your guests to mingle should the rain start to pour. Make sure your wedding party and day of vendors know your backup plans so everyone is best prepared. Decide early on what you want to do if it’s raining and stick to it. Speak with your vendors and photographers about their ideas and expertise—they will have great suggestions and even creative photos you can only take on rainy days!

Embrace the weather and remember the real reason you’re getting married. It’s not because of the weather; it’s because you love each other and want to celebrate that in front of your family and friends. Whatever the weather does is secondary. Have a selection of umbrellas on standby for yourselves, your wedding party, and your guests. Store them in beautiful baskets by the venue door—your guests will appreciate your thoughtfulness if the clouds roll in. And don’t forget to coordinate with your DJ to ensure their equipment is covered if you need music outdoors. Rain can make for some memorable and heartfelt moments, so keep your chin up and enjoy your perfectly imperfect day!
